Innovating a New Approach to Organ Transport
When a customer came to Moog looking for expertise in sensing and control of vital fluids on a system that would keep a kidney viable during transportation leading to transplant surgery, we responded with a unique solution.
Instead of relying on the traditional method of transporting kidneys in a large 'ice box' that lowers the temperature until transplant, Moog designed an integrated, customized system of highly reliable and accurate ultrasonic air-in-line sensors, pressure sensors, temperature sensors and pumping mechanisms. This integrated system is used to control vital fluids to keep the kidney viable for much longer than traditional 'ice box' methods of transportation.
The result is a larger percentage of harvested kidneys that reach the intended recipients in viable condition. And that means a higher kidney transplant success rate.
