Our People: Europe
Alistair Vickers
Systems Test and Reliability Engineer
Ireland
I met my wife while she was visiting the UK, at the time she was living in Cork Ireland and I was living and working in Gloucestershire UK. I was aware of Moog and its good reputation from the facility in Tewksbury, so when I heard of an engineering role being advertised at Moog Cork, I applied and was lucky enough to be offered the job. Soon after I permanently move to Ireland and we married in Kerry.
The biggest surprise at Moog is the company culture and particularly the low-profile culture. The way things get done within Moog is unlike similar sized organisations I have worked for. Programs can be as dynamic as a start-up and as formal as Corporation’s.
My first day was very structured; initially I met with the personal department to ensure all the administration, pension and health insurance was in place. After this I met with the training officer who described the company policies, procedures and health & safety training. To finish the day I had a tour of the facility during which I was introduced to just about every member of the company and finally I was handed over to the department were I would be working.
I work as a Systems test and reliability engineer. This involves developing an integrated test and reliability solutions for electronic assemblies at key stages of the manufacturing and design processes. It is common within Moog to find that you are drawn into all areas of the organisation and the specifics of roles are flexible.
I have a lot of good memories a personal favourite was working on the MOET. This was a European Union led program and brought together companies and universities from across Europe to work on a system for testing at Airbus. It was interesting to be part of such a diverse program and to see how other companies, universities and cultures go about business.
The projects at Moog are diverse and innovative. There is always something new and challenging.
Moog is a friendly company that thrives on relationships built up between colleagues at all levels both locally and internationally. In my experience Moog is keen to recognise people for their efforts and to develop careers.
Moog is sponsoring me through an MBA with the Open University. The course takes a lot of personal time but it is rewarding and I have the full support of my manager.
Moog is an innovative company that is involved in many high-level programs. When you are working on programs, such as, new commercial aircraft, you are aware that you are part of an engineering effort that will be directly used and admired by the population at large. Many of my friends work in areas of engineering that go unnoticed outside of the industry.
In organisations where I have worked the products, although interesting and innovative, are unfamiliar to people from a non-engineering background. The products that Moog manufactures are used in high profile programs like commercial aircraft that will one day fly my friends and family around the world. Knowing you have made a contribution to these programs is a source of pride and one that everyone can relate to.
