Rotary Actuators

The Rotary Actuator consists of a small-angle, permanent magnet stepper motor coupled with a Harmonic Drive Speed reducer, with a large rotating flange output member. The family of Rotary Actuators is based on heritage design with a wide range of step sizes available. Options include: Stepper or Brushless DC Motor, Direct Drive or Gear Transmission, and several options for position feedback such as optical encoders, resolvers, potentiometers, and hall effect sensors.

High Gear Ratio M8 Rotary Incremental Actuator

The High Torque M8 rotary incremental actuator is compact, closely integrated design made up of two key elements: a motor and a multi-stage speed reducer. The motor is a small angle permanent magnet stepper with relatively high holding torque. The multi-stage speed reducer offers a large reduction ratio (6400:1), low weight, zero backlash and high torsional stiffness. Co-axial nesting of the motor and transmission drive elements gives the unit low profile geometry. The actuator can be made available in two and three phase motors with optional features such as potentiometer/resolver output position feedback. All of the electrical elements such as motors and position sensors can be redundant with little or no change in actuator envelope.

Micro3 Rotary Incremental Actuator

The Micro3 rotary incremental actuator is a compact, closely integrated design made up of two key elements: a rotary actuator and a standard Type 3 speed reducer and output flange. The motor is a small angle permanent magnet stepper with relatively high holding torque. The multi-stage speed reducer offers a large reduction ratio, low weight, low power consumption, zero backlash and high torsional stiffness. Co-axial nesting of the motor and transmission drive elements gives the unit low profile geometry. The actuator can be made available in two and three phase motors with optional features such as potentiometer/resolver output position feedback. The actuator has the identical mounting features of the Moog standard Type3 line of Rotary Actuators.

High Torque/Small Angle Rotary Incremental Actuator


The High Torque Type 5 rotary incremental actuator is a compact, closely integrated design made up of two key elements: a motor and a multi-stage speed reducer. The motor is the heritage 1.5 degree permanent magnet stepper with relatively high un-powered holding torque. The multi-stage speed reducer, consisting of an input planetary stage and a harmonic drive, offers a large reduction ratio (320:1), low weight, zero backlash and high torsional stiffness. Coaxial nesting of the motor and transmission drive elements give the unit an optimized geometry. All of the electrical elements, such as motors and position sensors, can be redundant with little or no change in actuator envelope.

Model HT1 Rotary Incremental Actuator


The Moog Type HT-1 Rotary Incremental Actuator is a new addition to the rotary actuator product line. It is a compact, closely integrated coaxial design composed of a small size permanent magnet stepper motor driving the output stage through a gear transmission consisting of a larger size harmonic drive. The actuator provides relatively high holding and running torque for its size. This actuator is optimized for low weight and relatively high torsional stiffness. Co-axial nesting of the motor and transmission drive elements gives the unit a low profile geometry. Nested new technology coarse and fine potentiometers provide high resolution, telemetry with noise-free operation.

The Enhanced Type 5 Rotary Actuator is specifically designed for applications requiring high torque, high stiffness, load carrying capability, and small increment output step size. In order to accommodate a wide variation of customer needs, Moog has successfully qualified two variations of the Enhanced Type 5 Rotary Actuator.

Ultra Fine Angle Rotary Incremental Actuators

The Type 3-EF and Type 5-EF Rotary Incremental Actuators are designed based on a recently developed extra fine step angle permanent magnet stepper motor; which in combination with the standard harmonic drive gear reducers produces extra fine output step resolution. All of the electrical elements, such as motors and position sensors, can be redundant with little or no change in actuator envelope.
