Congratulations to the Space Shuttle Program

30 Years of Non-stop Flights to Low Earth Orbit

The Space Shuttle opened our skies, enabling us to live, work and explore in space.  As the first reusable launch system of its kind, it led to spacewalks, the build of the International Space Station (ISS), repair of the Hubble Space Telescope, and performed an array of service missions.

Since receiving its first order in 1974, Moog has supplied steering controls for every single Shuttle launch without failure.

Moog's Contributions to the Space Shuttle

Supplier of Quad-redundant steering controls to the Orbiter, its three main engines, and the Solid Rocket Boosters (SRBs):

• Our Thrust Vector Control (TVC) actuators gimbaled the Orbiter's main engine nozzles prior to lift-off and provided precise steering throughout the launch phase.  The actuators were powered by three (3) Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) which were controlled by Moog's gas generator valve modules and isolation valves.
• TVC actuators also controlled the tilt and rock of the SRBs, starting at lift-off until SRB separation.  After each mission, Moog refurbished the SRB TVC actuators for future flights.  We also provided APU fuel isolation valves on each SRB.
• Moog Elevon servoactuators controlled the flight surfaces of the Orbiter as it returned to Earth.
• Our Rudder speedbrake control module, a hydraulic valve, moved the split tail left and right, steering and slowing the Orbiter for landing.
