Location: Amsterdam, The Netherlands, ACTA Facility

Presentation Title: Bringing Space Flight Technology Down to Earth
Date and Time: Thursday 26th August, from 10:00 to 10:45
Abstract:
Airplanes and spacecraft have come a long way over the past 100 years.
From early beginnings with spruce and fabric contraptions very similar to Snoopy's doghouse, we are now at the point where unmanned aircraft can circle the globe. After a shaky start, with many accidents along the way, airplanes have become gradually more human friendly. Human factors research has improved the handling qualities so that today's aircraft are much easier to fly than ever before.
At the same time, training methods have improved to the point where it is theoretically possible to train a pilot in a simulator, and send her up alone for her first flight without ever having flown before. And just when the airplane has become easier to fly for pilots, we are moving into the era where we are removing the pilot from the cockpit altogether, and changing to autonomous unmanned, or "uninhabited" airplanes.
In dentistry, we have recently reached the point where simulation of dental procedures is just becoming possible. We will discuss what this means for the future of dentistry.
