Innovative Solutions to Challenging Motion Control Problems

16 April 2007

Böblingen/Hannover, 16. April 2007 – At this year's Hannover Industrial Fair (hall 23, stand A32), Moog a designer and manufacturer of high performance motion control solutions will present its newest electric, hydraulic and hybrid solutions for industrial applications. There will be 7 displays showing a range of application-specific examples which have been developed in cooperation with customers.

Innovative electrical fail-safe actuator for gas turbines

For power generation gas turbines, safety is paramount. In the past, it was not possible to achieve the industry-standard fail-safe requirements using electro-mechanical devices. Moog is the first to provide an electro-mechanical fail-safe actuator for valve flow in gas turbines. The patented concept features an innovative, electrically lockable spring-loaded brake and decentralized turbine axis control. The system complies with exacting requirements in terms of both performance and safety.

Flexible test and control systems for automotive testing

In the automotive industry, structural tests involve very high forces, round-the-clock data collection and monitoring, and the ability to quickly changeover operations to test new articles. Moog’s new Hexapod design combined with SmarTEST Control Systems, are an ideal platform for rapid structural and dynamic tests. This innovative design can be easily integrated into existing electro-mechanical or electro-hydraulic environments. This display shows how we can offer the customer greater flexibility by integrating our software seamlessly into the existing production environment while enabling faster and more efficient testing.

Intelligent servo-control for truly accurate wave generation

For testing of ships and offshore equipment, marine research must simulate realistic ocean waves in an artificial ocean basin. In response to this requirement, Moog, together with the customer MarinTEK has developed a water wave generator which creates defined waves using 144 paddles on multiple axes. The movement is controlled using our new Axis Control Valve. An intelligent FIELDBus communication network enables precise synchronization and remote axis diagnostics.

New pressure control system for hydro-mechanical deep drawing offers higher quality

Conventional deep drawing processes in metal forming may lead to quality issues such as deformed areas, tears, wrinkles and uneven texture. In order to avoid these problems and to achieve perfect quality off the press, Moog, together with a research institute (Institut für Umformtechnik, Stuttgart) devised a new system of pressure control which gives precise control across the full pressure range from 0 to 200 bar (2,900 psi). With this innovative concept, even critical metal parts can be formed right off the press.

World-Class Noise Sensitive Pump Applications

For noise sensitive applications in industrial machines, Moog offers the Second Generation of its Radial Piston Pumps, which features low noise emission and high durability. The outstanding features of the new design are achieved by a re-engineered mechanical housing with an optimized piston design, flow optimized suction path geometry and a sliding stroke ring. Visitors to the booth can listen to and experience the great improvement in noise levels of this pump and learn more about the technology behind the design that is able for nearly all sizes to produce a noise level which at no point in time exceeds the level of 70 decibel.

Reliable servovalve for heavy industry

Environments in heavy industry often involve heat, vibrations and dirt. Moog's new D672 servovalve is particularly suited to these applications thanks to its rugged, contamination-resistant design and its highly dynamic valve behaviour. It ensures dependable plant operation as well as outstanding dynamics and high precision in control applications in a demanding environment. The D672 is available in analogue and digital designs
