Moog Receives Frost & Sullivan North American Flight Simulation Technology Innovation Award
31 January 2007January 29, 2007, East Aurora, NY (NYSE: MOG.A and MOG.B ) Moog today announced it received the North American Flight Simulation Technology Innovation of the Year Award (2006). The Frost & Sullivan Aerospace & Defense Group presented Moog FCS, part of the Moog Inc. Industrial Group of East Aurora, NY and Amsterdam, Netherlands, with the award for its high payload, high performance, six degrees of freedom, electric motion base system 6DOF25000E.
The award is one of Frost & Sullivan’s Best Practices Awards recognizing companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development.
“Moog FCS’ high payload, high performance, electric motion base system 6DOF25000E has emerged as the premier motion control solution for flight simulation,” said Garrick Nagel, Aerospace & Defense research analyst of Frost & Sullivan. “Moog’s acquisition of FCS Simulator Systems in 2005 created a true leader in global industrial motion systems for full flight simulation applications. Electric motion systems developed by Moog FCS continue to forge significant inroads into areas traditionally dominated by hydraulic motion, with more gains expected in the future. Moog’s leadership and innovation clearly merit recognition by this award.”
Long a leader in hydraulic motion control systems, Moog has increasingly invested in developing electronic motion control technology in recent years. “At Moog FCS, we believe in using the best technology — electric, hydraulic or hybrid — for the customer’s specific application,” said Dave Fijas, General Manager of Moog Industrial, Americas. “Electric motion in the commercial ground based flight simulation market has increased significantly in recent years, with a significant share of North American full flight simulator (FFS) orders delivered with electric motion.”
Rated for 25,200 lbs, 11,430 Kg (the average FFS weight), the 6DOF25000E offers full electric actuation and digital control electronics, as well as power amplifiers to deliver fast and accurate movement at a touch of the pilot’s control. In May 2006, a FlightSafety International (FSI) all-electric FFS using a Moog FCS electric motion system received Level D certification from the U.S. Federal Aviation Authority (FAA). Level D simulators qualify commercial pilots for full type rating without the need for real flight time training, more commonly known as the Zero Flight Time standard.
The certification of the FSI simulator is a breakthrough made possible by Moog’s innovative developments in electric technology. While Moog FCS has delivered electric motion bases for simulators smaller than 25,000 pounds flying payload for over 15 years, it partnered with FSI to push the envelope of technology so the largest and highest performance motion bases could become electric.
