Next Generation Human-Rated Hardware

17 March 2009

Building on our human space flight experience dating from the Saturn Rocket, the Apollo Moon Landing programs, the Space Shuttle, and the International Space Stations, Moog has advanced to the next generation of spaceflight with the development of several key systems and components for the Ares 1 and Orion spacecraft.

The systems and components that Moog is providing includes:

  • Upper Stage: Thrust Vector Control System and Main Propulsion System
  • First Stage: Reusable Solid Rocket Motors Actuators and Thrust Vector Control System
  • Launch Abort System: Pintle Actuators and Controllers
  • Ares 1 and Orion Crew Module: Roll Control System Thruster Valves
  • J-2X Engine: Valve Actuators

Drawing on Moog CSA Engineering experience in vibration control, Moog is supporting ATK and NASA in the development of thrust oscillation mitigation for Ares I. We have developed multiple mitigation approaches and have demonstrated performance at the component and subscale-tested levels. These contracts demonstrate Moog's ability to provide low risk, mission critical, heritage derived solutions delivered from our world class manufacturing facilities. Combined with potential applications on the Ares I, Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) instrument unit, and the future lunar missions, Moog is establishing a critical role in the next generation of human space exploration. Ares I will transport the Orion CEV to low earth orbit and the International Space Station. It is an essential element of the US's space exploration program that will return astronauts to the moon no later than 2020.
