News - Moog Wins Contract to Supply Pitch Systems to REpower for the Nordsee Offshore 1 Wind Farm
East Aurora, New York, USA. – Moog Industrial Group, a division of Moog Inc. (NYSE: MOG.A and MOG.B) and a leader in providing blade pitch control, slip ring and rotor monitoring solutions for the wind energy industry, recently supported Guodian United Power Technology Co., Ltd., a member of China Guodian Corporation, to complete the first Low Voltage Ride Through (LVRT) Testing for a wind turbine in China. The tested wind turbine is located in Guodian Shuanglong Wind Farm in Jilin Province of North China. All 33 wind turbines in this farm are equipped with Moog Wind Turbine Pitch Systems that meet LVRT requirements and have been operating stably for six months.
Low Voltage Ride Through (LVRT) is a functionality required of wind turbines when the voltage in the grid is temporarily reduced due to a fault or load change in the grid. LVRT is defined in grid codes for specific countries. To comply with regulations all the electrical equipment including pitch control systems should meet LVRT requirements during grid faults. The LVRT testing for the Guodian United Power wind turbine was jointly conducted by China Electric Power Research Institute (CEPRI), the first and only test institute that has obtained international mutual recognition for wind turbine testing qualification in China. CEPRI first introduced advanced testing technology from Germany into LVRT testing and ensured that the tested wind turbine meets the grid safety requirements.
“China has abundant wind energy resources and improving the grid connection capability is one of the top issues for the Chinese market as it is required to maintain grid stability,” said Sean Gartland, Moog’s general manager for the Asia Pacific Region. “We are honored to have made a contribution to this breakthrough testing by providing high performance pitch control solutions for Guodian United Power, our major customer and strategic partner in China. Strong local engineering, manufacturing and service capability enables us to respond rapidly to wind turbine customer needs in China,” added Gartland. Moog has been in China for more than 20 years, since 1997, with manufacturing facilities and offices in Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong. In 2009, Moog added 3,500 square meters of manufacturing space dedicated to wind turbine solutions in Shanghai.
Moog incorporates LVRT capabilities into the design of its blade pitch control systems to ensure predictable, stable behavior for wind turbines even during grid faults. Blade pitch systems control motion in large mainstream wind turbine generator systems, enabling efficient use of wind energy and ensuring safety in the event of catastrophic failures. Moog Wind Turbine Pitch Servo Drives used in our Pitch Systems are designed to operate under extreme temperature conditions within switch cabinets in wind turbine rotor hubs, guaranteeing reliable operation. Another key benefit is the ability to withstand extremely high mechanical loads in rotating turbines, while improving turbine operating efficiency.
