Moog Weapon Stores Management System Launches HELLFIRE from Ground Vehicle
16 June 2014
SMS-equipped Helicopter Live-Fire Demonstration Set for June
Moog Inc. (NYSE: MOG.A and MOG.B) Space and Defense Group’s Integrated Defense Systems Business Unit and its defense-industry partners have demonstrated the firing of a HELLFIRE missile from a ground vehicle with the Moog Third Generation Weapon Stores Management System (SMS) at Eglin Air Force Base. The SMS is a weapon controller and provides the interface for targeting sensors, operator stations and command-and-control systems. Moog will explain how its SMS works at Eurosatory, Hall 6, Stand FE438 in the Viparis Nord Villepinte Expo Center.
For the live-fire exercise, Moog deployed a ground vehicle integrated with a four-station missile positioner to demonstrate the SMS. Moog carried out two tests, during each test the HELLFIRE and DAGR missiles were fired, respectively.
With the SMS, Moog successfully fired each of the four missiles. The SMS gives infantrymen a new lethal tool to use when artillery or air support is not available.
In a few weeks, Moog will also demonstrate the SMS, including the new lightweight Rocket Interface Unit (RIU), on a four-station rotor-wing light attack helicopter at the Yuma Proving Grounds in Arizona. This demonstration will consist of firing M134 mini-guns, M3 guns, and the Hydra-70 family of rockets (i.e., M151 and Talon LGR). Helicopter makers looking to deliver smaller, quieter and less complicated platforms can select the SMS to control a variety of guns, rockets and sensors.
