Moog Wins Two Technology Development Studies for Ground Based Strategic Deterrent

17 September 2015

Moog Inc. (NYSE: MOG.A and MOG.B) Space and Defense Group has recently won two technology development studies for the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) to explore new concepts for replacing the Minuteman III (MMIII) Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) weapon systems beyond 2030. The Air Force is strongly committed to the ground-based leg of the nuclear triad, expecting to spend $62.3 billion over 30 years in deterrence operations across the Future Years Defense Program.

Moog was awarded a two-year GBSD Strategic Open Architecture Thrust Vector Control (TVC) System technology study in March of this year. The technology study allows Moog to build on its extensive TVC experience to develop state-of-the-art systems for nuclear survivability. Moog has designed and manufactured missile steering controls for a wide variety of programs, including MMIII, Peacekeeper and long-range ballistic missiles. TVC Systems play a critical role on ICBMs, controlling the missile attitude on the pitch and yaw axes in response to commands from the guidance computer.  In addition to TVC system design, Moog is leveraging its heritage in radiation tolerant electronic components in order to serve the ICBM community with hardened avionics and electronics.

In June, Moog was awarded a second two-year technology study, GBSD Post-Boost Propulsion System. Moog is developing innovative concepts by incorporating elements from heritage ICBM propulsion systems with new technologies. By leveraging capabilities, such as the Moog EELV Secondary Payload Adapter (ESPA) Ring to integrate avionics and a propulsion system, the company offers a unique design that promotes efficient technology and lifecycle maintenance. Moog is also evaluating alternative green propellant solutions for GBSD.

Bell Aerospace, now part of Moog Inc. Niagara Falls, N.Y. facility, has a long heritage providing the design, integration, qualification and production of 1,000 MMIII Propulsion System Rocket Engines (PSREs). The company also provided key components in the PSRE, including the design, manufacturing, test and integration of the Attitude Control Engines (ACE) and propellant tanks. Moog’s East Aurora, N.Y. facility designed and built the valves for the ACE engines and the Axial Engine (AXE). The Niagara Falls facility also supported the Life Extension Assessment Program, and the Life Extension Program (LEP) for the PSRE.

The technology studies will provide decision makers information on cost, schedule, and technical risks associated with each option in order to meet program requirements for system performance maintainability, flexibility and modularity. Moog is proud to continue its history supporting the United States Air Force and its primes on the future GBSD Program.

Moog Inc. is a worldwide designer, manufacturer, and integrator of precision control components and systems. Moog’s high-performance systems control military and commercial aircraft, satellites and space vehicles, launch vehicles, missiles, automated industrial machinery, wind energy, marine and medical equipment.
