Moog Develops Maelstrom™ Electrification and Afterbody Kit

Modular solution increases capability and lowers cost in the undersea domain

Press Release Date: 6/23/2026

East Aurora, NY -- Moog Inc. (NYSE: MOG.A and MOG.B), a worldwide designer, manufacturer and systems integrator of high-performance precision motion and fluid controls and control systems, announces the development of a next-generation solution for UUVs and torpedoes to better equip the U.S. Navy against evolving threats. MaelstromTM delivers greater capability than the commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components currently in use, while fully meeting stringent military environmental and performance requirements.

The Maelstrom modular electrification kit offers a pragmatic path to higher capability and lower cost in the undersea domain. By providing a modular energy storage, propulsion, and fin actuation set across standard vehicle sizes, Maelstrom reduces non-recurring engineering associated with bespoke propulsion and actuation systems. This enables reuse across commercial and defense UUV and torpedo markets, lowering lifecycle costs and providing rapid re-purposing of inventory.

“Maelstrom delivers a cost-effective modular solution that accelerates development and shortens procurement timelines for the UUV and undersea warfare markets,” said Jason Weiss, General Manager for Moog’s Land & Sea Systems business unit. “The design intent is to allow propulsion and energy storage to evolve independently of vehicle development, so teams can upgrade power systems as technologies improve without redesigning entire vehicle architectures.”

Moog built a 6.75 inch fin-deploy afterbody functional prototype in 2024. Looking ahead, internal investments are already underway: three motor technologies are in development at TRL 3–5. These efforts are intended to accelerate rapidly deployable technologies for Navy use.

Moog has delivered innovative, value-driven, high-performance solutions for 75 years. Maelstrom technology enables mission success when performance matters most and keeps operators ahead of evolving threats.
