In several recent articles and our Fluid Power Handbook, we discussed the growing use of 3D printing in fluid power, particularly for use in valves and manifolds. Recently, we learned about Moog’s additive manufacturing capabilities. The company has its own additive manufacturing centers, with 12 LPB metal machines. Moog also specializes in non-metal (AM) printing with close to 10 machines that are capable of a range of plastic materials. For the last 10 years, Moog has been designing, producing, inspecting and providing post processing through its R&D center, a metrology and material analysis lab and stress reliefheat treat ovens.

WASHINGTON — Leonardo DRS has received an additional $13 million to continue engineering and testing a vehicle-mounted system that the U.S. Army hopes will protect soldiers from small drones, according to a July 31 Defense Department statement. Leonardo was awarded an initial $16 million contract by the Army in July 2017 to develop a counter-UAV capability dubbed the Mobile Low, Slow Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Integrated Defense System, or MLIDS, with hopes of deploying “numerous production systems in early summer 2018."

The U.K. Space Agency, in the second of a two-part announcement about its launch plans, said it had awarded $31 million to Lockheed Martin and $7 million to Orbex to develop launch systems that will operate from a vertical launch site to be developed in Sutherland, Scotland. The agency announced the location of the launch site, but not its users, July 15. Lockheed Martin will use the funding to establish launch operations from Sutherland as well as develop what it calls the Small Launch Orbital Maneuvering Vehicle (SL-OMV), an upper stage that will be manufactured by Moog in the U.K. to place up to six six-unit cubesats into orbit.

With its eyes firmly on Russia, the US Army is racing to field 8×8 Strykers with an array of weapons that can down enemy aircraft — from drones to helicopters to jets — and incidentally make enemy tanks think twice. The first prototypes will be delivered next year, with up to 144 (four battalions) by 2022, although the contract details are still being negotiated. With the IM-SHORAD (Initial Maneuver Short Range Air Defense) Stryker, “you’ll have more combat power, more lethality, than the Bradley fighting vehicle,” says Ed House, the retired Army infantry colonel who runs the program for Leonardo DRS.

At this point the probe’s trajectory was solely being controlled through its own internal propulsion system. The launch will take place in the coming weeks from Launch Complex 40 (LC-40) atop a dedicated SpaceX Falcon 9, completing ORBCOMM’s next generation satellite constellation. Moog Industrial Group and its partner HelpMeSee, a global campaign to end cataract blindness, will provide multiple demonstrations of a first-of-its-kind cataract surgery simulator in Beijing for representatives from the Chinese Ministry of Science & Technology, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) as part of the Grand Challenges annual meeting. Grand Challenges is a group of initiatives led by The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Grand Challenges Canada to promote the use of technology to help the world’s poor and solve pressing global health issues. Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide, despite the fact that a treatment exists. The HelpMeSee Eye Surgery Simulator is part of a global initiative to train the specialists needed to provide this essential surgical care.

The Apollo 11 launch occurred on July 16, 1969 and four days later the Lunar Module Eagle landed on the surface of the Moon. Shortly before 11pm EDT, Commander Neil Armstrong stepped onto the Lunar surface becoming the first human to set foot on another celestial body. Over 600 million people around the world watched a television broadcast of the event and heard Armstrong say “That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.” Eleven other people would eventually set foot on the Moon, including Armstrong’s Lunar Module Pilot Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, who described the view of the Moon as “magnificent desolation.”

Wuxi XinDeBao has recently completed a successful flex coupling durability test program with a new simulation table specifically designed by Moog to handle smaller payloads of up to 100 kg. The Hydraulic Simulation Table 100 kg, (H-ST-100), is a new addition to Moog Simulation Table solutions, designed to meet XinDeBao’s specifications for the testing of automobile exhaust pipes. It is also capable of performing durability evaluations of other small vehicle components. The Moog Simulation Table is available in electric or hydraulic versions depending on the performance required.

Moog Inc. (NYSE: MOG.A and MOG.B) Space and Defense Group is celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) but the story of Hubble begins nearly 50 years ago. Hubble launched in the payload bay of the Space Shuttle Discovery on April 24, 1990 (STS-31) but was conceived of over two decades previous before man had even landed on the Moon and the Space Shuttle even existed. The Large Space Telescope (LST), as it was called initially, was originally slated for launch in 1979 but funding was cut in 1974. Astronomers lobbied for this telescope that would help unlock the mysteries of the universe. In 1978 NASA resumed funding LST with conjunction of the European Space Agency (ESA) making this a truly international effort. The new launch date was planned for 1983 but later slipped to fall of 1986. The Challenger accident in January 1986 stopped Space Shuttle launches leaving the now named Hubble Space Telescope without a launch vehicle. Finally after two years of investigation the Space Shuttles were cleared to resume flight and Hubble got its launch date 11 years after the initially scheduled date. Hubble is the only space telescope designed to be serviced by astronauts and on five different occasions repairs were performed on-orbit. These repairs and upgrades are expected to extend the life of Hubble until 2020 if not longer.

The satellites, Adam and Anastasia (FM3 and FM4, respectively), launched today atop a Soyuz-STB Fregat-MT rocket from Europe's spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. The satellites, manufactured by OHB System AG in Bremen, Germany, are an integral part of Europe’s program for a global navigation satellite system, providing accurate, guaranteed global positioning service, interoperable with the US GPS and Russian GLONASS systems. The complete satellite system consists of 30 satellites in three planes of Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) and a ground infrastructure.

(NYSE: MOG.A and MOG.B) Space and Defense Group provided propulsion control to four NASA Magnetospheric Multiscale mission (MMS) satellites that launched this evening from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The spacecraft will study how magnetic fields around Earth connect and disconnect, explosively releasing energy via a process known as magnetic reconnection. Findings will enable new understanding of a universal process that is a major driver of space weather events that can affect modern technological systems such as communication networks, GPS navigation, and electrical power grids. All four satellites were carried into space on a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket.

The Electric Propulsion (EP) System was built by MHI and NEC Corporation (NEC), and the spacecraft was built by NEC in Japan. The Hayabusa-2 mission is JAXA’s follow-on to Hayabusa to perform a robotic sample return from an asteroid and bring it back to Earth. The Hayabusa mission launched in 2003 and returned to Earth in 2010 with a sample from a small asteroid near Earth named “25143 Itokawa”.

The product developments include fitting and integrating the 40 mm Cased Telescoped Gun in a new modernized turret. This requires optimization of gun aiming and stability performance during maneuvers for representing a typical battlefield mission.

On July 31, 2012, Moog Inc. completed the acquisition of American Pacific Corporation’s In-Space Propulsion business, now Moog ISP. The Moog ISP business, with locations in New York, California, Ireland and the United Kingdom, is a developer and manufacturer of liquid rocket engines, tanks, and propulsion systems for commercial and military satellites and launch vehicles.

Moog and Westmoreland Mechanical Testing and Research Streamline Servo Valve Service, Increase Uptime

Moog Industrial Group announced that a service contract signed with Westmoreland Mechanical Testing and Research Inc. (Westmoreland) has resulted in a servo valve repair and replacement expenditure drop of approximately 52 percent for Westmoreland. With Moog’s help, Westmoreland streamlined its servo valve inventory and carefully planned its scheduled use of “spares and repairs,” which allowed the test facility to reduce its repair costs and increase uptime.

Blacksburg, VA, USA – Moog Components Group, a division of Moog Inc., announces it has been awarded the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) certificate as an approved repair station at its Blacksburg, Virginia, facility for aircraft components. This allows Moog to expand services to its customers. Moog Industrial Group, a leader in providing high-performance testing systems to the automotive and aerospace markets, has been selected by Fraunhofer LBF, German Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability Research, to deliver a complete test system to be integrated with a climatic chamber and battery-testing safety system. The test system consists of a Moog High Frequency Hydraulic Simulation Table and real-time controller, including Moog operator test and application software.

Moog has designed and manufactured a Hydraulic Simulation Table based on the company’s latest line of Hydraulic Test Actuators. This offers more capability than a conventional orthogonal system, which is a table moved by actuators mounted on its base and sides. The Moog Hydraulic Simulation Table is a six-legged hexapod with two equilateral triangular frames set one above the other, offset at 30 degrees.
